Anniversary of Sebas’ diagnosis

Today is the anniversary of Sebastián's diagnosis of Myoepithelial Carcinoma (MEC), an exceptionally rare and aggressive cancer. It is a day we will never forget and that changed our lives forever.

On October 6th, one year ago, we got the dreaded call and Sebas was admitted to the hospital. A series of scans were performed and the results were devastating: the cancer had spread from his hand to his lungs, where 11 nodules were found. This meant the cancer was metastatic: Stage IV. Our oncologist told us that it was as scary as it could be and that the prognosis was poor.

Over the past year, Sebas underwent 10 grueling rounds of chemotherapy, four surgeries, 36 blood and platelet transfusions, among many other traumatizing events.

A year later he is still fighting. We are beside him fighting too.

To mark this day we want to share a video we made, which for us represents everything we are fighting for. We ask that you take two minutes to watch it and to meet our beautiful baby.

As a private family we made the decision to share our most precious and cherished memories in this video so as to reveal an authentic portrait of a family. While the memories shared reflect ours, we share them as a window for you to imagine other families who may be suffering our same despair, heartache, and fear. It is meant to be a tribute to a community of people who most days feel unseen and utterly helpless in caring for their babies. And yet as parents and caregivers, we know we will go to any length to fight for our children.

As we commemorate this anniversary, we reflect on the journey that Sebas and our family have been on: the lessons we’ve learned, the heartbreak we live with, and the outpouring of love, kindness and generosity that have kept us cradled and cared for over this time.

Our lives are made up of priceless moments, one right after the other: moments of joy and grief and everything in between. If we hadn’t realized it before, cancer taught us that. To fight for one life is to fight for the miracle it is to be alive. This is what we are fighting for and is the reason why we will relentlessly work to find a cure for MEC.

Please send a beso (kiss) to Sebas by sharing this post, following our cureMEC Facebook and Instagram pages, and visiting our website to learn more about Sebas’ story and our mission to find a cure. www.curemec.org
