cureMEC at CureFest
This weekend, Michael traveled to Washington DC so he could represent cureMEC at CureFest for Childhood Cancer.
As soon as he arrived he visited the Tribute Walls, which honor childhood cancer survivors, fighters and angels. As you can imagine it was an incredibly emotional experience for him to see Sebas' photo on the Tribute Wall among the thousands of photos of other children with cancer. We can, and must, do better for our children.
From Michael in DC: The last day of CureFest for Childhood Cancer was an emotional one. The speakers and performances by children cancer survivors and families who've lost a child were deeply moving. The bravery of these kids, who've gone through and continue to go through so much, is remarkable and truly inspirational. But it was the display of 1,800 pairs of empty shoes at the base of the Washington Monument, representing the 1800 children that die every year from childhood cancer, that hit me hard and scared me to my core. I don't want Sebas' shoes displayed in that Shoe Memorial! Part of me feels helpless. And if I sit still for too long, I become paralyzed and am overcome by sadness and depression. But I leave CureFest with a renewed sense of urgency and commitment to spend every waking hour to do all I can to save our Sebas. Thank you to all the organizers who made this experience a memorable one.
